A BIODEGRADABLE NONWOVEN FABRIC WITH PASSIVE HEATING BY FAR-INFRARED RADIATIVE COMPOSITE COATING

Personal heating/warming clothing systems with infrared radiation management, that control the body's radiation energy by blocking/suppressing, are highly favorable in improving personal thermal comfort and reducing energy consumption, which have attracted the attention of researchers, recently. Among the methods of development of personal heating/warming textiles, filling fibers and fabrics with far infrared reflective particles capable of converting the radiation energy emitted from the sun in the wavelength range of 8-12 μm and reflecting to the body, have promising applications on personal thermal management. In this study, it was aimed to develop a biodegradable nonwoven fabric with passive heating using far infrared reflective particle. For this aim, aluminum oxide microparticle and waterborne anionic aliphatic polyurethane composites having 5-10% particle concentration, were prepared and then deposited on surface of the polylactic acid nonwoven fabric through facile spraying and dry-cure process. Chemical and morphological structures of the reference and coated fabrics were analyzed by FT-IR and SEM. The physical (areal density), mechanical (bending rigidity/tensile properties), and breathability (air/water vapor permeability) of the fabrics were also determined. Heating performances were measured by a test system including far infrared lamp, thermal camera (Fluke Ti100 Thermal Imager), temperature sensors, and data logger system. The coating process onto the nonwoven fabric enabled the heating effect based on far-infrared emissivity. In addition, the mechanical properties of the coated fabric increased with particle content, while the permeability and bending properties decreased. The obtained heating performance in the nonwoven fabric by composite coating process make it promising candidates for the development of functional products where heating is necessary such as surgical gowns, beauty masks, and new generation agricultural applications such as biodegradable and heating mulches.
