COMPARATIVE RESULTS OF CHARACTERIZATION AND TRIBOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AFTER SHOT PEENING PROCESS ON HIGH MANGANESE AUSTENITIC STEEL & NITRATION STEEL
 
In this study, the characterization and tribology results after the shot peening surface hardening process of high manganese austenitic steel (GX120MnCr18-2) and nitration steel (8550) materials used in parts of heavy duty and mining machines that require hardness, impact resistance, and strength were compared. By using the shot peening method, it is aimed to achieve low cost, meet the need for high strength on the surface, attain the hardness values needed in the working surfaces, and eventually compare the post-processing capabilities of both types of steel. Higher manganese and nitration steels have been shown to harden significantly on the surface after being shot peened. This process may have benefits in industrial settings. The shot-peening test results on high manganese and nitriding steel were evaluated. Photos taken during surface hardening show that 8550 nitriding steel has a consistent surface. Height variations on high manganese steel show casting flaws. The optical profilometer images show that high manganese steel requires different shot-peening settings, such as replacing stainless steel with wolfram carbide balls. Additionally, sample compositions were tested for compliance with manufacturing standards. Post-microhardness testing demonstrated the efficacy of shot-peening on both materials. Steel 8550 provides enhanced friction and wear characteristics, together with a hardness similar to that of high manganese steel. The positive economic evaluation of nitration steel demonstrates its great potential as a practical alternative material. The analysis found that 8550 nitriding steel is a cost-effective and efficient alternative for heavy machinery gears and shafts, improving wear resistance but not corrosion resistance.
