STRUCTURAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMER BLEND/CLAY NANOCOMPOSITES

Polymeric materials with desired properties can be prepared easily and effectively by blending different polymers. Therefore, it is possible to use polymer blends in development of new polymeric materials that can be used in industry and bioengineering. In this way, new properties can be obtained for materials or existing properties can be improved. Polymer-clay nanocomposite materials, especially biocompatible polymer-based clay nanocomposites are one of the most important classes of polymer-based nanomaterials. Various properties of polymeric materials such as barrier, thermal and mechanical properties can be improved by adding different layered silicates to polymers, and thus polymer-clay nanocomposite structures with desired properties can be obtained. In this study, polymer blend/nanoclay nanocomposites were prepared by solution blending. Nanocomposites were formulated by mixing DEX/PVP/PEG blend and nanoclay with 5 wt.% and 10 wt.% based on the polymer blend in solutions and the polymeric materials were obtained by solution casting. Interaction/compatibility and structural properties of the polymer blend/nanoclay materials were identified by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The formation of the nanocomposites was investigated by XRD analysis. The increase in basal spacing in nanocomposites showed that the targeted nanocomposite structures were successfully obtained. The effects of nanoclay loadings on the thermal properties and dynamic mechanical behavior of the prepared materials were analyzed with TGA and DMA techniques.
